We have so many exciting things to share with you!!
First, I participated in a class or women farmers/ranchers in Texas offered by Holistic Management International which was phenomenal! What does this mean? It means that we have set a holistic farm goal, re-evaluated all farm enterprises, reviewed finances, time management, grazing plans, soil biology, marketing and much more to Lucky Lizard Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04143959640703758547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5405155647497367611.post-9954449281505676662013-08-25T17:45:00.000-05:002013-08-25T17:45:03.472-05:00Time and TraditionsTime and traditions, they march on, they carry us.
Dreaded August was actually spectacular in some ways. The ability to travel to see family and friends and talk, laugh and cry was amazing.
Beautiful and devastating things occurred this summer. The garden has to die off at the end of its cycle to bring forth new harvests next year. The academic calendar starts to remind us that summer cannot last.Lucky Lizard Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04143959640703758547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5405155647497367611.post-1024339446863442062013-07-30T10:29:00.000-05:002013-07-30T10:29:29.759-05:00Gosh Dang!
Gosh Dang!
My apologies for not updating more regularly or frequently!
Farm life has been busy, lots of gardening and grass mowing happening this time of year!
We waved goodbye to Rylee a few days ago--our 8 yo granddaughter that has been here visiting for nearly eight weeks. What a blast that was! Her parents James and Heather drove down from Iowa to pick her up--Bonus! We had a Lucky Lizard Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04143959640703758547noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5405155647497367611.post-71171310963080831452013-06-29T12:08:00.001-05:002013-06-29T12:08:22.880-05:00Dog Days
The dog days of summer are definitely here.
It's been at least 100'F every day this week, sigh.
The good news is that the mosquito population is down, not-so-good news is that tomatoes stop setting fruit at 100'F. What is on the plants will continue to ripen, but we won't have any more new fruit until the temps drop (Sept-Oct if we can keep the plants alive).

The goal is to milk when the grass season is in (early spring through late fall), instead of trying to milk all year. This plan also allows for time off for us, and if we are able, the flexibility to travel. The holiday season found us with the college adults home, fun food preparation, a few quiet moments, and lots of laughter. I am thankful for every minute.
We have added to the pet family this holiday season, please welcome Pirate a 4 yr old Smooth Collie that came to us via Texas Collie Lucky Lizard Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04143959640703758547noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5405155647497367611.post-27434022985059365212012-12-26T14:20:00.000-06:002012-12-26T14:20:05.060-06:00Garden UpdatePictures form the barn roof on Thanksgiving weekend:
The garden is, as always changing and evolving. At this time of year we are putting fruit trees in the orchard, growing a few little spots of cool weather veggies (broccoli, carrots, radish), everything else that is covered will have a short season to recover and rejuvenate for spring.

We have not had any rain to speak of this month, but had so much in June and July that the garden and pastures are still green. The tomatoes won't set fruit until it gets below 100 degrees, so we are working to keep them alive and happy to hopefully have more harvest.

Yes, it is awesome being 42 lbs lighter, and going from size 14 to 6 in jeans. I haven't lost in several weeks, though I am working out more so perhaps it is muscle or perhaps I am on a plateau, time will tell.
For anyone looking down the weight loss road, here are my simple suggestions:

It was during one of these siestas lately that it occurred to me I have not updated in a very long time, my apologies!
June saw the garden go absolutely bonkers! Day after day we brought in 20-30 lbs of Lucky Lizard Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04143959640703758547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5405155647497367611.post-67454584943595892852012-05-31T21:48:00.002-05:002012-06-04T16:01:34.462-05:00May Garden UpdateYes! The garden is growing and producing great guns!
No rain to speak of this month which means daily watering, we hope to get some free watering soon.
The two biggest pests this year are the caterpillars (decimated the zinnia bed, one of the strawberry beds and have been seen everywhere else--despite the BT), and the nut sedge. Crazy wicked bad weed. Causes me great frustration. I finally got past a plateau and hit the 40 lb mark today! This is more than 1/4 my original weight!!!
(I weigh once a week, mainly to keep myself from getting nutty about
it.)
I think 10 more, or whenever my body says the time is right. I started as a size 14, and am now a 6!!! Everything that can be planted is planted. I have no idea what will be planted as individual harvests come, but we have a little while to figure that out.

I think it is the prettiest, best garden we have ever had at this point. Gradually all the grass pathways are being covered with cardboard and pine needles (or hay or leaves), depending on what we have to work with.
I am a bit disappointed with the seed company I chose this year, seeds were ordered in February and are still not shipped. What's up you ask?
Well, at the farm and in life, lots of things!
At the risk of getting long winded and losing you along the way I am going to compile it all in one blog (I know, it would be so much better if I had kept up along the way with individual posts), my apologies.

I am not nor have ever been clinically obese, but I have suffered from chronic pudge and the resulting altered self image. I can pinpoint too many times in life when harsh or snide comments were made about my weight, and because they were from people I trusted, I believed them and accepted their judgments of me into my psyche.

Life has just been going along at a nice even keel.
Work is good, home/farm is good, cows are good, kids are good.
Char will be home in 6 days!
Dave and I have been on some fun dates, we play Canasta every chance we get and mostly our schedule has been the same so we are off work at the same time. (very nice indeed)

Louise calved last night, a precious tiny bull calf!
He weighs about 40 pounds and is the smallest calf I think we have ever had. Remember Lizzie's calf that was 85 pounds? She was a horse compared to this wee fella! He doesn't have a name yet, though it will start with "L" (for Louise).
Dave was home and caught the calf on his way to the ground (she delivered standing up), got him dried and Lucky Lizard Ranchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04143959640703758547noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5405155647497367611.post-86924098298883137062011-10-26T13:11:00.000-05:002011-10-26T13:11:39.010-05:00Great Causes to ConsiderThere are a few causes going on lately that are close to my heart and in truth they are all inter-related. If one touches you I hope you will help them out in any small way you can, even to share their story.

We are so very thankful to not have to mentally or physically deal with 90-100's in the forecast. Not much rain to speak of, 3/4" in September which brings our total since March to about 3.5".
